Do you struggle with Dieting? Don’t DIEt, try intermittent fasting.
When you think about fasting, you might have some religious motivations in mind. However, if fitness is your new religion, we have news for you. Intermittent fasting is the new craze in the dieting world, and it works, because it’s not a diet, it’s more of a lifestyle.
Lețs start with some history. If you think about our ancestors a few thousand years ago, where there was no Subway and KFC around, they didn’t have three or four meals a day. If they ate once, that was good enough to live another day, and they were a lot more active to get that meal. Considering that this is how our genes work, it comes as no surprise that some people get good results with intermittent fasting.
How does intermittent fasting work?
It all starts with listening to your body. The idea behind intermittent fasting is to make the interval during which you eat as small as possible, usually between 12 to 6 hours. During the remaining 12 to 18 hours, your body is fueled by the food you eat as well as by the fat deposits you have, thus helping you burn calories.
Some people take this to extremes and fast for 20 or 22 hours, but we don’t advise anybody to do that, at least not in the beginning.
Simply put, to stick to this schedule you are skipping at least one meal a day or eating fewer calories in total because you are not so hungry, as you just ate.
Benefits of intermittent fasting
People who get on this bandwagon claim it is a life changer. After the initial shock of eating all their calories in a smaller amount of time, they report a lot of positive changes. These include having more energy, a better mood, and fewer food cravings. Some even say they sleep better, which is a consequence of finishing your digestion long before going to bed.
Of course, the primary motivation of intermittent fasting is losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle once you have reached your target. Almost everybody who followed the regimen and did not cheat had incredible results in less than three months.
The challenges of intermittent fasting
Although it seems like a good and straightforward idea, there are numerous obstacles to this lifestyle. First of all, getting used to eating everything within a schedule. Our lives are so hectic we sometimes forget to eat, while other times we binge-eat while we binge-watch our favorite TV series. To succeed with this program, you have to adapt it to your lifestyle, especially if you work at unusual hours or shifts. Make sure you schedule your workouts during the fasting period to avoid feeling sick from moving while digesting, or eat smaller portions before the workout.
One of the biggest challenges is to get the support of your friends and family. To get the results you aim for, you have to stay on track and not allow yourself to have cheat hours.
